Biography

In Auburn, N.Y., on the 27th Feb., Mr. GEORGE STANDART, in the 89th year of his age. The deceased was born in Boston, Mass., in May, 1766. He heard the first gun and witnessed the first scenes in the American Revolution. In 1793 he emigrated to New Harford, N.Y., and became one of the first settlers of that then-unbroken wilderness. After living in New-Hartford twenty-eight years, he removed to Auburn, in 1821, where he continued to reside to the time of his death. Throughout a long life he maintained an unspotted reputation for strict integrity, honesty, fair dealing, and benevolence. As a neighbor and friend, he was highly appreciated. Those who knew him to most intimately, were the first to accord to him those sterling qualities which go to make up the useful citizen and good man. For the last sixty years of his life, he was a believer in the doctrine of Universal Salvation. He was active in the early measures to establish Universalism in Auburn, and through all the vicissitudes and trials to which that system of faith was subjected in that place, he was faithful, zealous and true in the discharge of his obligations to it. He lived to see it permanently established, and to witness the small handful of believers who first assembled to hear its promulgation expand to one of the largest and most influential congregations in that city. To his generous support and liberal donations, that success may in no small degree be attributed. The Clinton Liberal Institute, and the new Universalist College at Boston [Tufts University in Somerville, MA] were also aided (the former repeatedly) by his generous bequests. In all these respects he exhibited an example worthy of the general imitation of his brethren at large. The deceased left a large number of descendants—children and grandchildren—to mourn his departure. May they find consolation in the rich promises and hopes of the Gospel.
