    Ayoub Bey

    Birth: unknown

    Death: unknown

    Alternate First Name: Eyoub

Biography

Henry Seward met Ayoub Bey Trabulsy while visiting Palestine around 1859. Henry writes in the Auburn Daily Union he "met Ayoub Bey Trabulsy, an eminent and honored christian, at the house of the missionary of the Seventh Day Baptists of the United State at Jaffa, and in company with the American Consul. He was a man of good education and ample fortune, acting under authority of the Sultan in co-operation with the American Consul in his efforts to discover and bring to justice the murderers of an American missionary family at that place." Ayoub Bey gifts Henry two Arabian horses. Ayoub Bey also was interested in establishing a school or college for christians in Syria. Bey sent Mr. Abcarius and Mr. Susa to the United States to try and obtain funds but war in Syria erupted upon their arrival in the United States. Because of intense persecution of christians in Syria, they decided to change their efforts to constructing a hospital and to provide support to christian families at home. During Mr. Abcarius and Mr. Susa's stay in the United States, Ayoub Bey and his family fled to Alexandria as the war grew worse in Syria. It was with Henry's help they hoped to draw interest in the US and elsewhere to provide aide to the Syrian christians. At this point, a Mr. Wood published an article saying that Mr. Abcarius, Mr. Susa and Ayoub Bey were raising funds under false pretenses and that the money was going to them not the cause. Wood apparently cited the delay of the delivery of the horses and Bey's fleeing to Alexandria as signs of his guilt. Henry wrote an article in the Auburn Daily Union on August 18, 1860 explaining the entire situation (as summarized here) and his relationship with Ayoub Bey, Mr. Abcarius and Mr. Susa.
