She was the daughter of Abram and Elizabeth (Cantrell) Van Wyck and she was born in Nashville, Tenn. Her father was a native of New York city, her mother belonged to a Southern family in Nashville. The home of Sarah Van Wyck was in Mt. Holly, N. J., when she was placed in Troy Seminary, where she continued as a pupil from 1849 to 1851. In 1854 she became the wife of Dr. W. B. Magruder, of Washington, D. C., which city has since her marriage been her permanent home. She is a member of the Washington Club for self-culture and literary study. She was also employed by the Treasury Department.
