Biography:
Miles is possibly mentioned in 18590123FMS_LMW1. Frances talks about the death of "Col Lee" and expresses her hope that Augustus will fill Lee's vacated position, as in her mind, Gus is entitled "to the commission of the Capt who succeeds Col. Lee." According to "The Army of the United States" by Rodenbough and Haskin, "Colonel Lee died in January, 1859, and was in turn succeeded by Colonel D. S. Miles, who was killed at Harper's Ferry." So, it looks like Gus had some competition for the position. It is likely that Frances referred to Miles (either knowingly or unknowingly...) as "Capt" even though he was "Col". Apparently Miles was a drunkard and terrible leader, so I wouldn't put it past Frances to be snide. Though, she is often ill-informed about military matters. I guess it depends on how intelligent and aware you take Frances to be. No further comments.
