Kirby was a homeopathic doctor. In 1850, he addressed a NY state committee of doctors at the first meeting of State Homeopathic society "on the history and effects of past legislation in relation to medicine and the influence which the increasing prevalence of homoeopathy is exerting on the practice of medical men and consequently on the health of the community and the importance of a united and harmonious action of its advocates in promoting the great objects of this reform." of which he was a founding member.

In 1844 he was a founding member and elected treasurer of the American Institute of Homeopathy
