At the Westfield Centennial in 1920, James McMahan granddaughter, Mrs. Helen Smith Tennant, recounts the history of her pioneering grandfather placing his birth in March 1768. This is corroborated in a 1844 letter from William Henry Seward to Samuel S. Seward referencing Col. McMahan as "an old man not much short of eighty"
