Biography

William Vermilye Brady was born in New York. He worked as a silversmith and jeweler before becoming active in politics. From 1842-1847 he served as Assistant Alderman and then Alderman. He served as Mayor of New York from 1847-1849. He served as Postmaster of New York from 1849-1853. In 1853 he founded the Continental Insurance Company, serving as its director until 1857. He had two children. After his death in 1870 he was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in New York.
