"Their instrument was Judge Samuel Wilkeson,
a wealthy real estate promoter from Buffalo, New York, who as
general agent for the Colonization Society and then as president
of the board of directors and chairman of the executive committee,
exercised vast power. He declined any salary and ran the
Society in a businesslike manner designed to restore its finances
until his resignation in 1841. Under Wilkeson's regime, the NewYork
and Pennsylvania societies returned to their auxiliary status."
