Seward family servant, particularly a nurse to WSJ, throughout the 1840s. And on October 8, 1840, Frances writes to WHS during her visit with the Webbs at Spring Lawn: "Mary was of very little use to me yesterday—my traveling with such a nurse is absurd enough and exceedingly uncomfortable we get along rather better now we are stationary." At another time, she feeds Willie some bad food and he has a fit of vomiting. Frances reports, "I find Mary rather a poor dependence for a nurse she is more heedless than Maria I suppose I can live until November and hope dear Willie will though I think his life in some danger."
