John was born to Silas and Jane.

John was educated at the Homer Academy.

John married Maria on Feb. 13, 1845.

John married Antha on Oct. 30, 1849. Their daughters were Alice Idelle Fowler, Laura Maria Fowler, and Mary Jane Fowler.

John was a teacher in Owasco and the Village of Homer.

John formed a grocery partnership in Auburn with his brother David.

John was a Whig before he joined the Republican Party. He was Mayor of Auburn from 1866 to 1867, and State Assessor from 1873 to 1883. He was Deputy Postmaster from 1891 to 1902 under Knapp, Storke, and Clark.

John passed away at home at age 81. He was survived by two daughters and was buried on Dec. 11, 1902.
