Benjamin Faneuil Dunkin was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1811 he moved to Charleston, South Carolin to study law. He was admitted to the bar in 1814. He was speaker of the house from 1828-1829, and Chancellor of South Carolina when William Henry Seward visited in 1849. He was Chief Justice from 1865-1868.
