"Medical Pioneer. A physician and a social reformer, he was the founder of Boston's Perkins Institute for the Blind, and a pioneer in therapies for the blind and deaf. He was the husband of poetess Julia Ward Howe, author of the song "The Battle Hymn of the Republic".
