"Immigrated to New York, U.S.A., with his father, a calico printer, in 1815, and soon moved to Massachusetts and followed his father's trade in Taunton, Lynn, and West Cambridge. Became proprietor and editor of the Lowell COURIER newspaper from 1841-47, then co-proprietor and co-editor of the Boston DAILY ATLAS newspaper from 1847-53. While living in Massachusetts, he also served for several terms in the General Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (known unofficially as the Massachusetts legislature). He moved to Ohio in 1853 and co-editored the CINCINNATI GAZETTE from 1853-56, and the OHIO STATE JOURNAL from 1856-58. He then returned to Massachusetts and edited the Boston ATLAS AND BEE in 1858. Residing in Massachusetts for the rest of his life, he was best known as the state's Adjutant-General, from 1860-66 (including the entire Civil War period). After the war, he wrote a two volume set of books titled A HISTORY OF MASSACHUSETTS IN THE CIVIL WAR (Boston, 1868-71). (Source: DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY by Francis S.
