Biography

George Bemis was an American Lawyer and legal scholar. He attended Harvard Law and was admitted into the Bar in July 1839. He was a crusader for reform of the penal code in Massachusetts, and was involved in many groundbreaking cases, including "the first case to use forensic dentistry and circumstantial evidence to prove a defendant's guilt." He also served as a court reporter and published his notes on his cases as official records. In 1858 he retired to Europe and published pamphlets about neutrality in response to British positions on public law.
