Biography

"Robert was sent to Robbins School, and then to Dickinson College, from which he was graduated in 1798. He studied theology in the house of his Uncle JAMES in Salem, N. Y., where his cousin, Alexander, as well as his uncle, gave him instruction. He was licensed in 1802, April 20, and two years later, April 18, 1804, was ordained and installed in Broadalbin, now Perth, N. Y. He preached there until 1818, when he was called to Union College, Schnectady, N. Y., as Professor of Greek and Latin. He remained in this position, active or emeritus, until his death, Feb. 11, 1860.

His daughter, Sarah, wrote of him: 'From the time he came to this college he preached almost every Sunday in some of the churches of the surrounding country. He often went to his old charge, 21 miles away. He was very strongly attached to them.'"
