Daniel Appleton was born in Massachusetts. He worked as a dry good merchant in Boston, and the New York. In New York he began importing English books. In 1831 he began his publishing business by printing a collection of religious extracts. He married Hannah Adams, daughter of John Adams on May 4, 1813, with whom he had 5 sons. His sons were admitted into partnership in his publishing firm.
