Biography

Philip Spencer was the son of Secretary of War John Canfield Spencer. He was a midshipman in the U.S. Navy and was hanged for mutiny aboard the U.S.S. Somers on Dec. 1 1842. His and his fellow mutineers executions prompted a court martial of the Somers Captain and served as an inspiration for Herman Melville's story Billy Budd.
