Biography

George Wolf was born in Pennsylvania. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1799. He was elected to the Eighteenth, Nineteenth, Twentieth, and Twenty-First Congress. He served as the Governor of Pennsylvania 1829-1835. He was appointed collector of customs of the port of Philadelphia in 1838.

George Wolf was a strong supporter of public education, and signed the Free School Act in 1834. Because he did this he is known as the "Father of the Free School System."
