Ephraim May Cunningham, the son of William Cunningham, Jr., published a volume entitled Correspondence between the Hon. John Adams . . . and the Late William Cunningham, Esq. . . in 1823, the year his father committed suicide. The letters between John Adams and his first cousin once removed were "an obvious attempt to injure [John Quincy Adams's] chances for the Presidency. The letters . . . were strongly anti-Jeffersonian in the early years but gradually became vigorously anti-Federalist. . . ."
