Biography
A nephew of Washington Irving (son of Irving's brother Ebenezer), Theodore Irving was a teacher and writer. From 1837 to 1847 he was a professor of modern languages, history, and belles lettres at Geneva College in Geneva, NY (now Hobart and William Smith Colleges). On August 28, 1838 Theodore married Jane Sutherland of Geneva. The ceremony was performed by his brother, Rev. Pierre Paris Irving, who was serving as rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Geneva at the time. In 1854, Theodore Irving also entered the ministry of the Episcopal church and served a succession of churches in the area of New York City.
