Biography: 
Fifth Reactor of St. Paul's Church, Buffalo, NY. The seventh of nine children. In 1824, he took a position at St. Paul's Church in Red Hook, NY. In 1829, he traveled to Buffalo by wagon and boat on the Erie canal to become the Rector of St. Paul's Church, giving his first sermon in St. Paul on Sunday Sept 13th 1829, two days after his 31st birthday. In 1835, he was elected the first president of the Young Men's Association, which was later to became the nucleus of the Buffalo Public Library. In 1838 he received a Doctorate degree from Hobart College. On April 7th 1845. he married Mrs Lucrelia (Stanley) Grosvenor. In 1850, a new St. Paul's was builded. His last semon in the old church has on March 17th. Up to that time he had baptized 950 persons and preformed 273 weddings at that old church. In March 1874 ex-President of the United State, Millard Fillimore died. His body lay in state at St. Paul's and on March 12th the funeral took place there. Dr. Shelton having the honor of giving the funeral sermon. He retired on January 11th 1881 after 51 years at St. Paul's. On Sept 6th 1882 his wife Lucrelia died at the Pearl Street Rectory. In 1883 he died quietly at his old homestead in Conn. He was laid to rest next to his wife. He left $1,000 for a suitable monurment to erected over their graves. In 1897, the new square, created next to the Catherdral (St. Paul)was named by the city aldermen in his honor. Now a days the square is no longer around. Bio from The Cathedral online.
