Biography

George H. Andrews was born in New York City on September 3, 1821. At age 15, he became a clerk in the office of the New York City Whig newspaper “Courier and Enquirer.” In 1848, he was promoted to Publisher and Associate Editor. He earned a state and national reputation and used that power to support his membership in and success of the Whig party. Andrews became a candidate for Congress in 1854 and 1856. In 1863, he was elected to the New York State Senate and became known as versatile debater and contributed to several committees such as Chairman of the Committee on Municipal Affairs of New York City.
