Biography

Ben Holladay was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky. He was an army contractor during the Mexican War. In the 1850s he founded Holliday's mail which connected the western frontier states and the Pacific. He ran several stage coach companies that he sold to Wells Fargo in the mid 1860s. He also established the fast pony-express and a line of steamers from Alaska to Mexico. He later invested in mining and bought a tract of land in Westchester county on which he built an extravagant house. WSJ writes of meeting Holliday while in Oregon.
