Biography

Mentioned in a letter from Francis Seward to Augustus Seward in March 1846. Cary was a deputy keeper at the Auburn State Prison in 1846. Testimony from prison Warden Hiram Rothbun indicates that Cary is the guard responsible fro punishing Charles Plumb before his death. Plumb's death caused the New York State Government to reevaluate the use of corporeal punishment in prisons.
