Biography

He was a lawyer who became a member of the NY State assembly (1827-1829) and was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twentieth Congress (March 4, 1827-March 3, 1829). He was then appointed to the position of Assistant Postmaster General from 1829 until 1851. He resigned for 2 years because of poor health and returned as First Assistant Postmaster General and served from 1853 until his death. His parents in law were Erastus Root and Elizabeth Stockton Root.
