Biography
William Swinton was born in Scotland in 1833. He emigrated with his family to Canada at a young age, and attended Knox College in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He worked as a teacher and an author. He published a book, Rambles Among Words: Their Poetry and Wisdom in 1859. During the Civil War he worked as a field correspondent for the New York Times. After the Civil War, he wrote history and geography textbooks, including Swinton's Outlines of the World's History.
