Julia Stell Tuck was the daughter of Philadelphia merchant William Shorter Stell and his wife Anne Eliza Stell. She was mentioned in a letter from William Seward to his daughter Fanny, written July 11, 1859, when he visited Manchester in 1859, "Mr Stell is a retired American merchant, Mrs Stell is of Baltimore and her mother, an adopted child of ten and a bright intellectual family relation of Baltimore make up the party." Julia eventually married Edward Tuck, an American banker, diplomat, and philanthropist known for funding the establishment of the Tuck School of Business at his alma mater, Dartmouth College. They were philanthropists who donated millions of dollars in art as well as a hospital in France. "
