Lydia Sharpless was the daughter of Jesse and Joanna (nee Townsend) Sharpless, and one of ten children born to the family. She and her brother Dr. John Townsend Sharpless lived together and remained unmarried their whole lives. They cared for their niece by their sister Eliza, Emma Wood (nee Parker), for eight years.
