Biography

Born in Stowe, Massachusetts, studied law at Harvard and then in 1838 left for Michigan where he enjoyed a brief, but successful, career as an attorney. He then focused his attention to newspapers, serving as editor of Detroit's Daily Advertiser and then the Lansing Advertiser. Was appointed during the Lincoln administration Consul of Frankfort-on-Main shortly before his death in 1861.
