U.S. Naval Academy Class of 1853. During the Civil War he served in the major blockading squadrons for the Union. Served as Captain of the Gunboat Morris in 1863. Fanny Seward references him in her 1862-1863 diary when she encounters him at General Keyes headquarters in Yorktown.
