Merchant from Bristol, Rhode Island and plantation owner in Cuba. Frederick Seward alludes to a visit to his plantation in San Ricardo, Cuba, in a letter to his father, William Henry Seward, dated April 1870.  Sometimes referred to by the honorific title of "Don Ricardo" due to his holdings in Cuba. Smith was married to Hannah Borden in 1834.
