African-American servant in the Seward house in Washington, D.C. during the assassination attempt on William H. Seward in 1865. Bell answered the door to assassin Lewis Powell and later identified him in a line-up. Testified against him in a military tribunal conducted after the Lincoln assassination. Fanny Seward references him in her 1863-1865 diary where she recounts events of the attack.
