Biography
Edward Hitchcock Jr. was born in Amherst, Massachusetts, the son of Edward Hitchcock and Orra White Hitchcock. Edward graduated from Amherst College in 1849 and continued to study medicine at Harvard Medical School. He married Mary Judson in 1853 with whom he had ten children. From 1861 to 1911, Edward served as the Parmly Billings Professor of Hygiene and Physical Education at Amherst College. In 1872, Edward traveled with Abijah Fitch and Julius Hawley Seelye on a trip around the world. This trip is referenced in a letter written by Lazette Miller Worden to Augustus H. Seward dated July 29, 1872.
