Elizabeth Philp was born in Falmouth, Cornwall, England to geographer James Philp and Jane Gluyas Philp. She was a noted singer and composer during her lifetime. In 1863, she visited her brother, Franklin Philp, in Washington, D.C. where he ran a successful bookstore and stationary shop. Frances "Fanny" Seward records Elizabeth visiting Grover's Theater in her 1862-1863 diary.
