Biography

Wayman Crow was born in Hartford, Kentucky. At the age of 12, he entered into an apprenticeship with a dry goods store and by 1828 was running his own store. In 1835, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where he entered into another dry goods business with his cousin, Joshua Tervis. Crow was elected to the Missouri State Senate in 1840 and for another term in 1850. Crow was instrumental in the founding of Washington University in St. Louis. Crow married Isabella Conn in 1829 and together they had nine children, including Emma Conn (Crow) Cushman, a noted author and close friend of famed nineteenth-century actress Charlotte Cushman.
