Biography
William Stuart entered diplomatic service with the British government in 1845. He served as the Secretary of the British Legation under Lord Lyons in Washington, D.C., beginning in 1861 and was promoted to Charge D'Affaires in 1863. He retired from diplomatic service in 1882. Frances "Fanny" Seward references him in attendance at a social gathering in Washington, D.C. in her 1862-63 diary.
