Asa Sprague was a stagecoach turned railroad investor. At the time he was mentioned in Harriet Weed's letter to Frances Miller Seward, on June 16, 1835, Sprague's first wife Maria Britten and the mother of his children had died. In 1840, he remarried, to a woman named Esther Hughes. The stagecoach business and railroad businesses he owned were lucrative. The stagecoach business spanned from Albany to Buffalo. The railroad connected Auburn, Rochester, and Syracuse.
