Biography
Henry J. Gardner was the Governor of Massachusetts from 1855-1858 and was a member of the Whig Party. Before becoming Governor he worked as a merchant, and then he served in various political positions such as a member of the Boston Common Council, a member of the State House of Representatives, and then as a delegate for the Massachusetts Constitutional Convention. He did not win re-election for Governor in 1857, and retired from politics after leaving office in January of 1858.
