Biography

Appolonia Tochman was a well-known figure in shortly before the Civil War. She was well known for her participation in wars in Poland, which was romanticized by the American press. She eventually was asked to tone down her public image, and ended up marrying Gaspar Tochman. Whereas her husband decided to take a Confederate stance, Appolonia supported the Union and did not follow Gaspar south during the Civil War.
