Biography
Dr. David C. Winfield was the son of Dr. Charles Winfield of Orange County, New York. He attended Montgomery Academy and received his medical training in his father's practice. He obtained a medical degree from the Albany Medical College in 1840. Winfield began an independent practice in Middletown, Orange County, New York in 1841. From 1859-1865, he served as the Clerk for Orange County and resided during this time in Goshen, Orange County, NY. Winfield served on the Board of the Medical Society of Orange County, as well as other community offices. Frederick William Seward may reference him in a letter to George M. Grier, dated March 16, 1863, in which he requests Grier to inform "Mr. Winfield" that his recommendations have been forwarded on to William H. Seward, Secretary of State, and Edwin McMasters Stanton, Secretary of War. The letter specifically references the appointment of "surgeon" not being "personally unpleasant to him," alluding perhaps to the appointment of surgeon general.
