Lady Elma (Bruce) Thurlow was the daughter of the 8th Earl of Elgin and Kincardine. She married Thomas John Hovell Thurlow Cumming Bruce, 5th Baron Thurlow, on October 18, 1864. Lord Thurlow served as private secretary to the British Minister in Washington from 1865-1866. Frances "Fanny" Seward references Mrs. Lucinda Peale and Fanny's friend, Mary Segoine, attending a reception at Lady Thurlow's in January 1866 in her diary from that year.
