Emily was the daughter of Alfred Haley, once a fugitive slave who settled in Canandaigua, NY. Her sister Laura married Charles Douglass, a son of Frederick Douglass. In earlier years, there is a daughter born in 1851 referred to as Alice, which may have been a nickname for Emily, as she was born in 1851 but there is no record of an Emily in the census records.
