William Osborne Stoddard was a private secretary to President Abraham Lincoln from 1861-1864. He was educated at the University of Rochester, worked as an editor for Chicago's "Daily Ledger" and Champaign's "Central Illinois Gazette," and was an abolitionist. He worked for the Republican party during Lincoln's presidential campaign, and then for the Department of the Interior.
