Biography

Born in Steuben County, New York. Studied law and practiced as a lawyer. Served as a member of the State assembly in 1852, 1857, and 1858. During the Civil War helped organize seventeen regiments to fight for the Union. Served as Colonel of the 117th N.Y. Infantry. After the Civil War, elected as a Republican to Congress. Later appointed Minister Resident to Japan and then associate justice of the Florida State Supreme Court.
