Florida April 6th 1834
My Dear Brother,
James Wickham Vail has re-
quested me to write you to ascertain whether he
can go into your office as a student at law and
if he can on what terms, from the conversation
which I held with him on the subject I am led
to suppose that he is left to rely on his own
exertions for furnishing means to complete his
studies. I have not given him much encourage-
ment still perhaps you may be inclined to do so
it may be proper for me further to say that
so far as my knowledge goes he has a good
character was a good student at Mendham
what his standing was in College (Union) I
do not know. he also requests me to say
that you he should be grateful to hear from you on
as early a day as your convenience will permit.
Our town meeting was held on Tuesday
the entire opposition ticket except the Justice
was elected. John Curtice was elected Justice
George H. Houston was the opposition candidate
and on many accounts was objectionable he has
already a Brother a justice in the town, he was
not the popular candidate in the immediate
district, he was advised and urged by Esq Welling
Wisner, his Brother and others not to run but
having drummed up his crew he got the nomi-
nation, (I am rather glad than otherwise that
he has been beaten.

I have read Mr Webster speech on presenting the
Albany Memorial. I think his allusion to the
Anti Masons is very happy and how can help but
have their weight, but to what extent the Party
will go is left for time to determine.
And the mortgage on the state what will
they not do, I ask myself is it a delusion
or is it truth, are the opposition blinded and
ignorant or is the administration corrupt it is
not difficult to know.
A meeting of the Partizans of Jackson was
held at the Court House in Goshen, approving of the
renewal of the deposite and recommending Van Buren
to the conversation as a Candidate for the Presidency
it appears to me that they degrade themselves
much in this County, they appear to be acting
upon that foul and detestable sentiment of the
natural hatred of the poor to the rich, seeking
to inflame the minds of the poor, and profligate
against their prosperity and benefits.
We have commenced our building, the cellar
is dug, the stuff on the ground, and all is ready
for the carpenters and masons. We are in
hopes by three or four weeks to go in.
But the present dull times is truly dis-
couraging indeed. Many people made their
calculation, planned their business, but in the
result they may fall short one half and per-
haps more. Rye and corn at 65 cts. wheat at
62^1/2 and 68^1/2. Butter 12^1/2 and less. Beef fell 50 percent.
But it is caused by an experiment, and what
is lost in money and comfort and prosperity must
be made up in Glory. Reform and Van Buren

I had a letter a few days since from Cornelia, she
says they expect to move in a few days, but not
far—she is well...
Mrs Post you recollect a Daughter of Colonel
Post Robert Randolph and wife of Colonel Post
from St. Louis arrived a few days since in the
Village, she appears care worn and in delicate
health, how long she will remain with her
Mother I have not year learnt.
I know of nothing new more to say.
