Westfield Dec 30 1837
Dear Henry
We have closed the day
with 73 transactions & $1,600 received
– and the week, with 313 transactions
and $7,152 received.
I am much embarrassed with
crises of one year articles – to en-
courage the downcast discovery
to prick up the dull & guard
against the rogueish, in every
case, is what I cannot promise
myself. But I am investigating
each case as carefully as the
case will admit, taking back
none, or rarely one – & getting a
little if possible or a note with
another name, where nothing else
can be had.

say that they will try – a few are
discouraged & will lose their farms.
Your New York bill is pro-
tested.
We have settled with Rowland
Cobb

.
A man by the name of
John W. Lewis
Unknown
or something like
it writes you from Buffaloe
that he expects to be in Albany
& Washington this winter &
asks when you go East – wishes
to see you. Says you must be
put in nomination & thinks
it can easily be done &
will be done.
All well. Write &
tell me the chara[ c ]
