Goshen Monday 29th
My dearest Sister, I hope you have not felt as
much solicitude about me for the last week
as I do about you all the time — I promised
to write if we did not leave New York Wednesday
we were detained there until Saturday and yet
I found no time to write a line — I never felt
more relieved than when I actually made my
escape — The chief cause of my not writing was
that I supposed every day would be the last
of our stay there until we came away — I was
sick the whole time of my stay — went out for the
first Wednesday — that day I spent with Mrs
Lee
Birth: 1803 Death: 1899-03-30
, glad to find some quiet away fromthe Astor house — there is none there — Thursday
was spent in returning a small number of the
calls I had received but the day being unpleasant
I was forced by my increased hoarseness and
coughing to come home and have Henry

to makemy apology to those whom I found it impossible
to see — Friday afternoon we were to come up the
river but hearing that there was to be a morning
boat Saturday we concluded to wait as I disliked
landing at Newburgh in the night — we were
again disappointed the boat deferred her trip until
evening — Saturday at 5 oclock we left the city — it
rained hard — and was every way uncomfortable —
left a box containing some books — my new hat
and all my crape and handkerchiefs — broke
a bottle of cordial which Henry was carrying
to his father
Birth: 1768-12-05 Death: 1849-08-24
— the contents of the bottle weredistributed on two or three of our cloaks
one of which will require a through washing
so so much for the commencement of our
unpropitious journey – the rain continued the
night was exceptionally dark and when we
arrived at West Point the Captain

declaredit unsafe to go any further until the storm
abated — the rain had changed to snow
and the wind was blowing so violently that
the pilot could not guide the boat — about
ten oclock we all went to bed — were
called up again at 2 — the storm having
abated the boat was again put into motion
at half past three we were landed at Newburgh
in a snow bank through which we walked
to the tavern — I was pretty much exhausted
and quite disheartened when I discovered that
I had left my pretty soft muff on board
the steam boat — my anxiety was so great
about the boys

that I thought of nothing else — I shall
be exceedingly grateful if we all return
from this wild adventure alive —
yesterday we were all day coming home through
the snow and mud — last night it frozen from
we go to Florida in a sleigh — Poor Mrs

we goto Florida immediately — stay there a few
days and then return home — I do not know
what way as the river must have closed
last night — I will write again from
Florida — My love to Frances
