Saturday Jan 12 –
My dearest Sister,
I intended to have written
earlier but have written more frequently
to Henry
Birth: 1801-05-16 Death: 1872-10-10
than I anticipated and I have only
just so much strength to employ – You have
undoubtedly seen as I did the death of
Cornelia
Birth: 1805 Death: 1839-01-04
in the Journal – I could scarcely believe
that it was our sister Cornelia – it is a severe
affliction for her family – so totally unexpected –
Probably none of her brothers
x Birth: 1808-08-26  Death: 1888-12-07  Birth: 1799  Death: 1872-04-23  Birth: 1793-08-23  Death: 1841-02-24
feel it so acutely
as Henry – they were devotedly attached to each
other – I received a few lines from him yesterday
he says “I cannot write about this dreadful
bereavement – Dr Canfield
Birth: 1798-11-26 Death: 1865-01-05
wrote on Friday evening
night last, that Cornelia died that evening of the
Quinsy – that she was conscious of her situation
and died with resignation – This is all that is
known to me – There are four precious orphan
babes
x Birth: 1837-09-15  Death: 1839-03-10  Birth: 1834-07-25  Death: 1922-02-28  Birth: 1832-02-20  Death: 1876-01-14  Birth: 1829-12-04  Death: 1867-10-25
– What shall I write to the Dr concerning them.”
This was the whole of his letter – poor Henry
how I wish I could be with him in this season
of sorrow – No definite arrangement is of course
yet made about the time when we shall go -
Pa
Birth: 1772-04-11 Death: 1851-11-13
is at home yet – talks about going next week
which is altogether uncertain – I wish I could
Page 2

see you for I am wholly unable to write the half
I wish to say – I am getting along slowly
but still suffer with nausea faintness and
palpitation of the heart – We were glad
to hear you got home so comfortably – We
have a very amusing letter from Augustus
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11

describing the proceedings of the 1st – but it
has all been forgotten in the sorrowful intelligence
which followed – Tell Frances
Birth: 1826-12-12 Death: 1909-08-24
that Freddy
Birth: 1830-07-08 Death: 1915-04-25

is talking to Chitterbob who has usurped my
easy chair – he was very lonely after you
left as were we all – I will try to write
again early next week – your own Sister
Frances –
