My Dear Cousin Henry I never felt much
interest in Politicks untill your nomination for
Governor ^was^ talked of, then all my feelings was
aroused. My heart told me that you must succeed,
for you would do honour to the Empire State in ruleing
with justice. I was proud & happy that my Husband
was as active & concientiously engaged for you as I
could wish. The result filld me with gratitude to all
your Friends, but above all to our Heavenly Father
who had smiled graciously upon our efforts. --
Then came self. Geo had renounced his profession
& gone in debt for a Farm which his health would
not permit him work, he had my Mother
& afflicted son
office as being a desireable means of cleaning him
from debt & enabling us to indulge in proper
charitys. no wonder that I was interested & confident.
The power was in your hands to make us independent
could I for a moment doubt the Friend & Cousin
of my childhood, no not for a moment did I untill
this very day & I cannot rest untill I have acknowle-
-dged to you that my ear has heard, & deep into my
heart has sunk the thought that you would cast off
from you the certainty for an uncertainty. The report
has come that you wish instructions from the County
who shall be their surrogate & the Locoes are rejoicing
in anticipation of a Whig fight you would not hesitate
if you knew how important it is, to us that we should
have the means of dwelling together as a Family.
