This was included in a letter from Frederick William Seward
to Frances Alvah Chesebro on August 23, 1840. Part of this letter is
lost.Last Monday evening Clara
Choat
not au fait in all things relating to the beau monde every-
thing passed off well and agreeably — I have not enjoyed
a party so well in many years – There was an assemblage
of about 120 people about 20 of whom I could call by
name the rest I imagine were chiefly brothers and sisters
in the Church – The night Clara left I attended a
small party at Mrs E. Hills
there were also Mr
Myers
Porter
and the
Conklings
— William Hills
he is at home spending the vacation — came home with me
at 10 o clock — that night dear Willie
I have not been out of the house since — Yesterday was the
day of the convention & Mass Meeting. I believe it resulted
in a manner perfectly satisfactory to the Whigs — I wish
you could have seen the procession of wagons which
passed here I counted more than 100 – They gave
three cheers in passing for Henry
tears to my eyes — this was but a small part of the
whole — In the evening Mr Blount
of Washington County and Mr Kelly
speakers called upon me – I do not think I shall
ever be able to recognize any of them again as Helen
kept us sitting entirely in the dark the whole time of
their visit — They had seen Henry at Saratoga and told
me what you may have heard before that while addressing
an assembly of people the staging fell and overthrew him
with a multitude of others — it was singular that the
same accident happened to Webster
or the day previous — I believe no one was seriously
injured – Henry returned to Albany Friday — Willis Clark
told me nothing in his letter — I do not hear from Blatchford
except through your letters – he may have gone to Saratoga with
Henry there is a letter here for him from Oswego but I am at a
loss where to send it — Jennings
unintelligible things about you in his letter to me — Do you
really think I had better come to Canandaigua I hardly know what to
